NASA: an astrobiology finding

WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe.

This is part of NASA's sober press release to the media. So, what was the discovery?

The discovery was that in an extremely harsh and unforgiving environment, on the waters of Mono Lake in California, astrobiologist Richard Hoover of NASA's National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) uncovered a new species of living bacteria: Spirochaeta americana that may change the way scientists look for alien life in Mars and other places of the universe.

However, in the future, what is found here may also be found elsewhere. Will that be a glorious day?
