How data encryption works

Data encryption is a way of transforming plaintext into ciphered text; it is a way of hiding information. Although rarely used in the past, except by the military, today is the prevalent tool for online banking, online shopping. Encryption is used by almost every transaction that involves handling money via credit cards and or any other means of fund transferring.

However, the encryption is transparently done in the computer; no user intervention is needed. Is the manipulation of data with a computer like traveling inside a labyrinth?

How is data really encrypted? Changing letters to garbled symbols? Transposing the order of the characters? Using sophisticated algorithms? Well, this is what computer experts and security experts say, but this teacher has another explanation ...
